Frequently Asked Questions

Who can have an allotment?

Anyone over 16 years of age and  living within the Glasgow City Council boundaries and who does not already have an allotment or have been put off another allotment can apply.

How much will it cost me to rent an allotment?

A full allotment will cost around £34.50 per year. This is payable to the council. Concessions are available for students, pensioners, people with disabilities and those in receipt of benefits. On top of this, there is an allotment association fee of £10 a year.

How big are the allotments?

The average size of an allotment varies. We have some half plots, quarter plots and starter beds for people who want to see what having an allotment is like.

How much effort does it need to run an allotment?

You must be prepared to attend your plot weekly between April and October every year. It is a big commitment. You will need between one and three half days a week depending on the size of the plot you take on.  The weeds grow even if you are not there and unless you keep your plot cultivated you will lose it to the next person on the waiting list.

Do I have to be an expert gardener to rent an allotment?

Once you have decided to commit your time and energy, most people learn on the job. Knowledge comes with experience and trial and error as you get to know your land. Other plot holders are often more than happy to help. There are also a great number of books on growing fruit, vegetables and flowers.  Our website also has information to help you get started.

What can I do with my allotment?

Unlike some other allotments, we like to think we are pretty free and easy with what you grow. The bottom line is that plots are kept cultivated, productive and tidy.

Do I have to cultivate my allotment organically?

We discourage people from using weed killers and pesticides on their plot, but that doesn’t mean you have to be organic. In many cases, an organic approach is cheaper.

How do I go about renting an allotment?

Contact the Secretary of Kennyhill Allotments Association by email.

You will be required to complete an application form, go on the waiting list and keep in touch by email.

Will I get an allotment straight away?

Allotments are becoming more and more popular. This means there is a waiting list, but don’t let that put you off. When you reach the top of the list, we will offer you the first appropriate allotment to become available. However, if you do not like it you will go back to the bottom of the list.

What is Kennyhill Community Allotment Association?

Plot holders must be a member of the Association in order to lease a plot.

They pay an annual subscription.

The Association is in charge of the running and upkeep of the allotments. There is a committee that meets once a month. It is elected every year in Spring at the Annual General Meeting.  You can find more information on the Allotment Association here.

When I get my allotment is that it then?

No! We expect you to muck in a few times a year with communal days: clearing land; tidying and working on the upkeep of the common areas.  Apart from making the place look better, it is a good chance to catch up with other plot holders, swap stories, seeds and advice.
